The popular Frank Duffy 10 mile road race, which incorporated the Dublin championships, saw a large number of Donore Harriers athletes and supporters out in the Phoenix Park on a dry and humid Saturday morning (22/8/15). And the club supporters around the course had plenty to cheer about as there were four age category winners and plenty of other notable performances in black and white singlets.
Strong, consistent running by an in-form Ken Nugent (53.21) saw him gain from 9th to sixth place over the latter stages of the race. Ken, who is now based in Cambridge, cannot be faulted for commitment and his return of form boosts the club prospects ahead of the cross country season.
Next clubman home was Fergal Whitty (55.18) who placed 14th overall and in the process won the M40 category. Niall Lynch (56.15) was the 3rd in the same category when placing 30th overall, whilst Phil Hennessy (58.02 and 46th overall) was 3rd in the M45 age group.
17 years-old Michael Gibbs (1.03.55), racing over the distance for the first time, was the first junior home placing 199th overall. Barry Potts (1.07.06 and 321st overall) and Terry Mee (1.15.19 and the 749th finisher) won the M65 and M70 age groups respectively.
Second season club member Karla Doran (1.04.31) continues to make steady improvement. Running in her first 10 mile race Karla placed 232nd overall to place 5th in the F35 category. Not far behind Grace Kennedy (1.05.01) was running for 3rd position in the senior women’s category – finishing 261st overall.
Sam Allen (17.42) placed 3rd in a rain-drenched Jog For Jockeys 5km road race at the Curragh on Sunday morning.
