REPORT: Donore Harrier Barbara Cleary (22.25) continues her impressive journey in athletics. The 48 years-old Clare native placed 4th overall in the women’s masters race in Sunday’s AUTUMN INTERNATIONAL OPEN CROSS at Abbotstown. In the process she won the W45 category with a minute to spare over runner-up Caroline Donnellan (23.24) of Edenderry AC. The result would have guaranteed Cleary a place on the Irish team for the British & Irish Masters cross-country championships which was due to take place in Santry in November. However, the race was cancelled back in August due to “uncertainties” around ongoing Covid-19 restrictions and guidelines.

Also, in the master women’s race Sorcha Loughnane (23.49) put in another impressive performance to place 12th overall and 5th W45.

The 4,500m race was won by Annmarie McGlynn (20.58) of Letterkenny AC, who was awarded with the Jim McNamara Golden Shoe trophy.

The master men’s race over 6,000m was won by Tim O’Donoghue (23.36) of East Cork AC, who also picked up a Golden Shoe award. The Golden Shoes were presented to the winners by Jim’s son James McNamara. This was the 5th year of the awards in memory of the Late Donore Harriers athlete and coach who competed in the 1976 Olympic Games marathon in Montreal.

In the same race Gavin Keogh (27.51) finished 30th and 8th in the M40 class, and Des Tremble (28.32) who came 40th and 5th M50.

The club had two competitors in the senior men’s race over 7,500m. Daragh Fitzgibbon (25.16) made a strong return to competition to place 22nd, with Kane Collins (25.29) just three places further back.
