Donore Harriers Athletics Report – w/e 8th May 2022

HIGHLIGHTS: Eric Keogh 2nd in CHARLOTTE INVITATIONAL 5,000m. Michael Ryan 2nd in GALWAY 5KM SERIES. Our juveniles were back in action in the EAST LEINSTER SCHOOLS (DAY 2), DUBLIN JUVENILE LEAGUE (NO.3) and at the WATERSTOWN PARKRUN. Sinead O’Reilly scored a good result in the MALLORCA IRONMAN. Four members competed in the IMRA PRINCE WILLIAM’S SEAT race.

Eric Keogh (14.22.15), representing Queen’s University North Carolina, showed good form when placing 2nd of 19 finishers in the 5,000m race in the CHARLOTEE INVITATIONAL TRACK & FIELD MEETING at Charlotte, North Carolina on Saturday 30th April 2022. This was an encouraging performance by the Donore Harriers athlete whose progress has been hampered by a foot injury in recent months. The race was won by Paul Arredondo (13.50.84) of Charlotte University, with Michael Durkin – another Charlotte Uni athlete – 3rd in 14.29.43.

Michael Ryan (17.12) took 2nd place in the 2nd race of the GALWAY 5KM SERIES at Loughrea on Tuesday evening (03.05.22). The race was won by Stephen Casserley of Castlegar AC in 16.49. Ryan placed 3rd in Race No. 1.

In the 2nd day of the EAST LEINSTER SCHOOLS TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS at Santry on Tuesday (03.05.22) Julie Cleary and Honor Lynch contested the Intermediate Girls 1,500m but did not make the podium in a keenly contested race. Coach Joe Kelly said afterwards: “Good solid runs by Julie and Honor today. They were in a stacked race with some of the best runners in Leinster in the field. Great practice for Julie ahead of her Leinster Schools 3,000m in 2 weeks’ time”. LTAD Lead Coach Graham Hopkins said: “Two smashing athletes who are both on the upward curve”.

The 3rd of 4 rounds of the DUBLIN JUVENILE TRACK & FIELD LEAGUE took place in Tallaght on Sunday. The Donore Harriers highlights included wins by Luuk Jackson (U/14) and Paddy Nolan (U/16) in the 200m, and the one, two by Liam Morris (2.45) and Reuben McCormick (2.53) in the Under 15 Boys 1,000m. The club had four members compete in the IMRA PRINCE WILLIAM’S SEAT RACE near Glencullen on the border of counties Dublin and Wicklow last Tuesday (03.05.22) The race over a picturesque and popular mountain trail was 9.37km in distance with a total elevation of 405m. Alasdair Brown came 4th in 43.12 with Niall Lynch (45.29) in 10th spot. Ben Conroy came 72nd in 58.04 with Ken McKeown (58.55) close behind in 78th. There were 165 finishers.

Sinead O’Reilly competed well in a high-profile triathlon event in Mallorca. The popular ZAFIRO IRONMAN 70.3 had a start list of 2,628 competitors. Sinead came 1,176th overall and placed 19th of 67 competitors in the W40 age category. She was 51st in her class after the 1.9km swim in the Bay of D’Alucia, which she completed in 41 minutes flat. She was 30th fastest in the one-lap 90km cycling route that passed through many of the local Mallorca towns. Sinead then greatly improved her overall position by being the fastest W40 woman to complete the half-marathon run route in a time of 1.31.29.

Several club members participated in the Waterstown PARKRUN on Saturday morning with Alan Farrell (19.07) and Niamh Clifford (19.27) the first two finishers. They were closely followed by 3 juvenile athletes with Dylan McKenna 4th home, Lucas Collender 7th, and Katie Delaney 15th and 3rd woman. Elsewhere in PARKRUNs Will Morris was 1st home at Griffeen, Simon O’Toole came 2nd at Brickfields, new member Laurence O’Neill was 2nd at Southwark (London), and Paul Nunan was 3rd at Sports Campus Abbotstown.
