John Travers of Athlone IT has won the men’s 10,000m on the opening day of the Irish University Championships held at the newly refurbished Mardyke in Cork.
In a cat and mouse race, DCU’s Paul Robinson, better known as a middle distance racer, pushed the early pace, and was soon joined by Alan O’Shea, who went to the front midway through the race. Travers took over with a few laps to go, winning in a very respectable time of 30 minutes 36 secs. Robinson was second, with Liam Feely of UL passing O’Shea for third.
