Dublin Novice kicks off cross country season

Donore are always the traditional hosts of the opening race in the cross country championship season and the tradition is also for sunny weather on this day – this year was no different. It was poignant though that the race did not have the late Jim McNamara on the sidelines – who as Dublin Board chairman Pat Hooper remarked at the presentation afterwards – was never known to miss this race.

There was a mix of new and experienced runners in the ladies 4k novice race which consisted of one small lap and 2 x1.5k longer laps. Marathon runner Alma Hanevy used her endurance to work her way through the 74-strong field really well and finished in 6th. The youngest member of the team 19 year old Niamh O’Neill made her adult cross country debut here and ran a great race, starting off hard but maintaining the pace very well to finish in 11th place. Another two cross country debutantes were Sinead Finn finishing in 21st and Amy Dodd in a close 33rd to the line with two other runners. Jona Kalemi was next in 62nd and will build on this in future races as will Marianne Dunlevy who finished in 64th. The team were at first listed as 5th out of the 9 teams but a mistake was rectified and the team were in fact 4th – just 3 points off the bronze medal.

For the men, the disappointment of narrowly missing out on a team medal (Donore 4th – 58 & Crusaders 3rd – 51) was offset by Rossa Hurley’s tremendous run to secure an individual bronze (20.29), behind Robert Murphy of Rathfarnham AC in second (20.14) and the winner, the classy Cathal Doyle (20.09) of Clonliffe Harriers, a junior international who competed for Ireland at last year’s European Cross Country Championships.

Rossa came through over the first two laps to join the leading group of four athletes, taking the race lead at the midway point before Murphy and Doyle prevailed over the final 2k. The other team scorers Luke Boland in 14th (21.11), Phil Hennessy in 19th (21.27) who paced his race to perfection moving throughout the field over the course of the race and fourth scorer Patrick Byrne in 22nd (21.33). Next in was Ken Norgrove (25th, 21.39), Fergal Roche (34th, 21.56), Des Tremble (39th, 22.08), Kevin Nolan (42nd, 22.21), Alan Farrell (44th, 22.28), Graham Hopkins (60th, 23.05) and Des Gill (91st, 27.00).

Overall, this was a very encouraging opening race that shows Donore have squads capable of competing for Championships medals throughout the cross-country season.

One down, just the Leinster Novice, Dublin Senior, Leinster Senior, National Inter-Clubs, Dublin Intermediate, National Novice, Dublin Masters, Leinster Intermediate, Leinster Masters, National Intermediate, and National Masters left to go!

Donore Opening Run & Race Round-Up

October 1st at Donore Harriers was the traditional annual opening run and group photo. A little later on and with a great turnout, Donore Harriers celebrated the achievements of its runners 40 years ago in 1976 and 50 years ago in 1966. Club President Iain Morrison introduced and there was a minute’s silence for the Donore members who passed during the year and who had family members present.

A keen custodian of Donore’s rich past, Willie Smith spoke about the 1966 European championships and the Montreal Olympics 1976. He also made a presentation to the family of high jumper Dick Raftery who were present.

Dr Cyril White who joined the club in 1944, has been President of the club and a former coach and is also well know as a race starter . He spoke and paid tribute to the volunteers that have made the club a great one. He also found out this year that he is longest serving starter in athletics in Europe, playing this role for 62 years, congratulations Cyril!

Michael Gygax was there to talk about his excellent new book on Irish Masters Athletics and brought copies of it for sale. It features a number of Donore athletes some of who were present, Willie Dunne, Ann Woodlock and Tony Murphy. There were many extended family members of the late Jim McNamara present, also family of the late Maurice Mullins. Michael read extracts from the book and Jim McNamara’s older brother Maurice paid a a moving tribute to Jim.

Thanks all who attended and helped out, especially the family members of the deceased – great to see faces old and new.

Midweek & Weekend round-up

There were no less than 3 night-time races during the week which featured runners from Donore Harriers. In Sligo was the Ballymote Firefly 5k challenge organised by Corran AC and Dermot McDermott. John Travers won the road mile event in 4.01 seeing off Alberto Sanchez in 4.02. The 5k featured young Sam Allen and he was an excellent 4th in 15.56. Earlier in the week, the Twilight Team Challenge took place around Sandyford Business Park. The winner in 17.21 was back from injury Ian O’Leary; 3rd overall and 1st woman was Ide Nic Dhomhnaill fresh from a great Rathfarnham 5K days before. Karla Doran was 3rd lady in 18.55 and great to Aislinn NiDhomhnaill back in action where she ran 19.20.
The ParkWest 10k and 5K nighttime races took place in the Clondalkin area and the indefatigable George Brady was 3rd in the 10k in 36.30. Luke Boland came 2nd in the 5k race in 17.04 with Peter Nugent running 20.09 There were only two Donore athletes in the Dublin Simon Fun Run, held over 5 miles in the Phoenix Park last Saturday. Anthony Flannery came in 4th in 27:16, while Tony Barry dipped under the 30-minute barrier finishing in 15th place in 29:42.

In Galway, Mark Dooley showed excellent form ahead of the cross-country season with a clear win in the half marathon. His time of 71 minutes is particularly impressive considering his victory was a solo run, with 2nd and 3rd place 7 and 8 minutes behind and bodes well for the important races coming up over the next few months.

Roads round up, top placings in Kildare, Kilkenny and Wicklow

Donore runners have been achieving top placings on the road in the past few weeks from 5k up to marathon distance.  At the inaugural medieval marathon in Kilkenny, George Brady who has ran over 100 marathons had one of his best ones by finishing 2nd here in 2.50.32 one of his fastest times over this distance.
Rossa Hurley was an emphatic winner of Clonliffe Harriers’ 10,000m Grand Prix race, finishing in 33.36, over half a minute ahead of 2nd place. Terry Mee (M70) ran an impressive 47.25 in the same race.
Earlier in the week a big contingent contested the Grant Thornton 5k corporate challenge around the Dublin Docklands competing for their workplaces.  First home there was Graham Hopkins who has not raced much of late so it was great to see him back in action where he got 16.31 here with new member Fergal Roche in 16.42.  Sinead Graham finished in 19.25 a new PB.
The week before, John Travers came 2nd in the Fionnuala McCormack kilomarathon (26k) in 95.17.  The same day, Mark Dooley was 2nd 31.59 and Lee Van Haeften 3rd 32.34 in the Tony Donoghue 10k in Moone Kildare.
Sam Allen won the BHAA Pfizer 5k in Celbridge in 16.30.
In Charleville Cork, Blessington, Athlone, Longford and Tullamore over the past few weeks Donore runners have been competing – with top 3 positions for Barbara Murray, Rory O’Connor, Ashling Swaine.  Full results below

The day before in the Phoenix Park, over 40 Donore runners took part in the Frank Duffy 10 mile road race which also doubles as the Dublin 10 mile road championship (results of that awaited). Before the race even started, participants got soaked and the benefits of a slightly easier course than last year were cancelled out by the rain and wind that runners had to contend with in the race. Despite that, there were many good runs on the day. First home for the club was Anthony Flannery followed by Phil Hennessy Fergal Whitty. Grace Kennedy finished first of the ladies and was 17th woman overall with Amy Moriarty in 20th position and she got a PB. Well done to Barry Potts who won the M65 agegroup. It was good to see some new members in the singlet for the first time (Audrey Gahan) and a group of the Fit4Life runners. Many are using this as a good buildup to Autumn marathons – well done all, full results below.

Sinead Jennings returned to Ireland after her Olympic rowing adventure and one of the first things she did was run a half marathon in her native Donegal, she was the first woman by some distance in a time of 83 minutes – inspiring stuff!
Over in the west Aine Mahony was the 2nd woman home in the Gaelforce West event, which is a combination of cycling, kayaking and road and trail running, sister Breda Mahony performed well too.
Well done all!

Cellbridge and Castlepollard 5k – Leinster Squad Announcement

Donore Harriers runners are continuing to make their presence felt on the road race circuit around Leinster with some impressive performances in the last week.  Chief of these was a Donore 1-2-3 by the men’s team in the Celbridge 5k.  Mark Dooley, now back living in Ireland was the decisive winner in 15.29.  In second place was men’s captain John Dunne in 15.50 and the ever improving Sam Allen in 15.54 to take 3rd.  Ciaran McCarthy finished in 16.33.  The men’s team were the clear winners.  Karen Behan was one of the 2 Donore ladies competing and ran 20.43 knocking 10 seconds off her 5k time in Athboy a week before and well done to

There was more good news for some of our young endurance runners when Athletics Ireland announced its provincial junior endurance squads and making the cut for the Leinster squad are Louis O’Loughlin, Fathi Aden and Sekeyere Ahmed who have had numerous successes over the past year and in Louis’ case have already represented Ireland a few times already.  Well done to all.

National half marathon and roads roundup

The National half marathon is incorporated into the annual Rocknroll half marathon, a tough course which starts on Dublin’s North Wall, goes out to Kilmainham, Chapelizod and then an extended loop in the Phoenix Park. This year runners also had to contend with strong winds on the course.

The Donore contingent this year was not as big as some previous years but 10th man home in 74.04 was Michael McMahon.  Barry Potts won the M65 age group in 95.38Grace Kennedy made a late decision to compete so was not on the AAI list but was first home in 90.54  Sinead Graham was delighted with her 96. 40 PB, Alma Hanevy had a tough day so not as far up as she would have wished in 98.32 but her run and Angela Eustace’s excellent 1.40 meant that the ladies masters team won silver and Angela was just outside the W45 medals to be 4th in her age group.
And well done

National League Final and Celtic Games

Our ladies senior track and field team made club history on Sunday when the won bronze in the National club track and Field League Division i championships. They are the first ladies senior team to medal in these national club championships. Well done ladies.
Our men competed in the Premier division of the Men’s National track and Field league championship at the same venue. Despite many late injuries and sickness they also performed brilliantly finishing 4th , just 3 points behind third placed Galway A.c A great performance from a very young team. Now they are competing with the big boys and “no fear”.
The club’s track and field performances this summer have been brilliant, so,  much thanks and congratulations to our coaches and back up teams.
In the Celtic Games in Swansea on Saturday Louis O’ Loughlin won the u.16 1500m  in a pb. against teams from England, Scotland and Wales. What an end of season triumph for an athlete who has won 10 straight  All-Ireland championships over cross-country and track in the last year. Congratulations Louis. Also congratulations to Aoife Lynch also competing for Ireland at the Celtic Games who finished second in her 200m race at u18 .
What great young athletes the club is blessed with, not forgetting their coaches.

Historic occasion as Donore men and women reach National league final

Ahead of the final tomorrow. Here is a long delayed report on the 2nd round of the national league and some of the other track fixtures in the past weeks!
I’ll do the road separately.

On August 7th for the first time in the club’s history, the men’s and women’s teams have reached the national track and field league final in Tullamore.
The teams secured their passage to the final in the second round of the league on a glorious day on the Mary Peters Track in Belfast on July 17th.
The ladies team had their best ever performance in the history of this event topping the pool in Belfast which has never happened. This was made possible by a super collective effort and high points in a number of events with only one event not covered. Lara O’Byrne won the 100mH and the pole Vault. Maximum points were also achieved by Lynda Tcheudji in the triple jump and the 4x100m team (Lynda, Andie Maguire, Robyn Okeeffe, Suzi) won their event with ease. There were impressive 2nd place finishes by Lynda again in the 100m, Caoimhe Mackey in the 400mH and Anne Gormley in the 1500k walk. In the throws and jumps we were strong throughout with the versatile Lara 3rd in the high jump, Clodagh Read was 2nd in the discus and 3rd in the hammer. Lauren O’keeffe was 4th in the shot and 6th in javelin. Andie Maguire was a late callup for the long jump and did really well to come 4th. Sinead Lambe had a great race in the 800m finishing 2nd and Karla Doran came 3rd in a competitive 1500m. With Suzi OFarrell 5th in the 200m and Maura Kearns 6th in the 400m, the last track event was the 4x400m and this was the true marker of how far this team has come. Traditionally this was an event in which we often finished a distant last but this time our team (Caoimhe, Clodagh Martin, Maura, Sinead) were a brilliant 2nd.
112 points was the total, and combined with the first round points was more than enough to reach the division 1 final.

The men’s team were missing many key people on the day but thankfully the team did enough to qualify for the Final. One of the key partipants was multieventer Rolus Olusa who was 2nd in the 110mH, 4th in the 400mH and 4th in the triple jump. Eamonn Fahey too gained valuable points with his 3rd in the 200m and 2nd in the 100m. There was an excellent 2nd place in the 4x100m relay and 3rd in the 4x400m. After some fouls, Kolade Abidoun had a super final jump of 6.05 to get 3rd in that event. Jako Oosthuizen gained valuable points by winning the 56lb weight event and coming 3rd in the javelin. Alex Kelly was 4th in the discus and 5th in the hammer and also bravely filled in for the 1500m when we were missing out runner on the day. Sam Allen came 5th in the 5000m and master runner Donal Iremonger was 7th in a tough 800m and David Campbell 7th in the 400m. Max Carey did very well for 5th place in the pole vault, not his usual event. There was an anxious wait over the next 24 hours as the points were totted up from both pools, thankfully the 92 points added to the first round total got the men through.
Thanks to Leonie Newman for all the coordination of the team, David Campbell too, all the coaches and Iain Morrison also for the informal awards handed out on the journey home!

Elsewhere on the track, the Morton Games, IMC and 3 graded meets saw the track season reaching its final stages.
John Travers finished 5th in the Albie Thomas 3000m at the Morton Games in 8.02.25. Eric Keogh had an excellent run in the 1500m IMC v BMC Race at the games where he finished 2nd in 3.47.08. A week earlier he ran 3.48.65 at the BMC meet in Watford. Eamonn Fahey reached the 100m final and got a time of 10.98.

Other notable performances on the track over the past few weeks were in the Dublin graded 6 meet where 8 Donore men competed in the 5000m events. First home was a back on form Mark Dooley in 15.20.67. Lauren Okeeffe topped the hammer event in the graded 7 meet and in the 8th and final graded meet, Ide Nic Dhomhnaill won the ladies 3000m in 10.40.58

Great performances on the first day of the European Youth Championships by Donore athletes

Fantastic news from Tbilisi as Alex Clarkin has qualified for the final of the 110m hurdles tomorrow at 3.05pm. In doing so he broke the Irish National youth record twice in his two runs. First running 14:09 to place third in his heat and following up with a sub 14 second 4th place in his semi final to qualify for the final in 13:97.

Aoife lynch has also qualified for the semi finals in the 200m finishing just outside her pb in 25:00. Aoife finished 4th in heat 4. Her semi is at 1.45pm tomorrow.

It’s a terrific achievement for both athletes, their coaches John and Paul and the Club. We wish them the very best in their races tomorrow.
