Silver Lining to Strong Donore Performances at the National Road Relays

Donore Senior men were agonisingly 1 second off a Second National Senior Relay Title in 2 years on Sunday. It capped a day of strong Donore performances which saw 7 teams all place strongly in Men’s and Ladies Senior and Masters events. Big improvements were noted in many performances on last year and are a testament to the dedication of athletes and coaches this year…….

Donore came to the Road relays in Raheny this year having won the Men’s senior 2 years ago and the Men’s Masters last year and with 4 ladies teams all of the members had shown great improvements over the winter, so hopes were deservedly high.

A great number of coaches and supporters, relatives and friends were there to cheer on the teams and it is no exaggeration to say the overall standard this year was phenomenal and definitely the best fields assembled in all the races in recent memory. We had A and B teams in every event except the Men’s Masters which was as good a participation as only one other club.

First up the Ladies Masters. Karen Behan (A) and Rhona Duane (B) had fine lead off runs and the intense nature of the competition was evident from a significant fall right on the very first straight. Our ladies were very solid and Karen brought back memories of her Dublin Intermediate cross-country win with her fast finish. Barbara Murray (A) had superb 2 mile leg running 12min 08 Julia Hackett(B) paced her race as she always does so well to leave the teams well placed. The final flourish was down to Bronagh Eliot and Audrey Gahan who were both debuting at the relays but showed their wonderful speed to bring the team’s home in 8th and 13th in a field of 25 teams.

The Masters Men featured a brand new A team to last year and gave a superb defence to the title the Masters men won last year. Fergal Swaine in a year where he has come right back to his very best form got stuck in from go and kept the lads in good contention with sub 5 opening mile. Rossa Hurley captain fantastic of the men’s squad this year did another captains performance with a superb 2 mile leg bringing the men right into reach of the medals taking several big scalps out on his leg with a 10mins 10 secs performance of superb pacing. Donal Iremonger who was part of the silver medal senior team from 2004 showed his class over middle distance with a great run and brought the home team in 5th in the end, despite huge pressure from several other clubs.

The senior ladies were next up Sorcha Ni Dhomhnaill (A) romped the girls right in the medal contention on her first mile with a 5min 17s. Her twin sister Ide had the tough task of the all-important 2 mile and gave a great performance running an 11min 19s. The gaps had begun to emerge in the field with several internationals having done that leg in the women’s race and Sinead Lambe was never under pressure from behind and the ladies A finished a very impressive 6th in a top class field. They were second Dublin club behind UCD a point worth noting and over a minute ahead of last years A team performance. Our B team had a great run Aisling Swaine running under her usual distance with a very solid 5min 44 mile, Aisling Ni Dhomhnaill with a 12mins 2 mile and Maura Kearns with a massively improve on last year mile of 5min 24 which bodes hugely well for the track season coming up. The B ladies were a very creditable 13th.

Finally the Senior men were ready to go, all kinds of rumours were abound, Ennis had a strong team, Raheny would always be the favourites, and Letterkenny were seen as a dark horse. The legs of 2, 1, 3, 2 miles respectively are a true test of clubs distance and middle distance strengths. The Donore A team was the guts of the superb winning team of 2 years ago, so the lads knew they were right in there. Lee Van Haeften led the men out just like two years ago. He has battled injury and illness and come back strong after Christmas and although not quite the run he had two years ago he did his job superbly keeping us right in striking range after the first leg just off the lead pack. Ray Hynes stepped down and aced the mile and brought us right into the thick of it, but gaps had opened and Raheny Shamrocks in particular had made a break. Kilkenny City Harriers and DSD were also ahead of Donore at this point. Up stepped our double reigning National Indoor and Outdoor 1500m champion John Travers for the tough all-important 3 mile leg. John ran not only a course record of 14min 04 but ran a supremely maturely paced 3 laps getting us into 2nd after lap 1 and surging passed Raheny on Lap 2 and held that lead handing off to Eric Keogh with 3 second gap. Was it enough, how would it play out.

Conor Dooney of Raheny bridged the gap leaving the nervous crowd to speculate if he could break Eric, or if Eric could hang on. Playing to his strengths Eric sat coolly in behind Conor. It was a titanic struggle with Conor doing everything to break Eric and he just got away with under a half a mile to go but Eric did not give up. Flat out and his legs reeling in lactic he grimly would not be shrugged off and one last unbelievable kick up the home straight brought him within a second of snatching a famous gold. It was a thrilling race and a momentous effort from our team who ran their hearts out only to taste the bitterness of so nearly winning. The team ran faster than they did to win in 2015 and Eric ran a 9min 20 leg faster by 20 second than his finishing leg 2 years ago that brought home the gold. It can only be said they left nothing behind and the Raheny team were pushed to the very edge and deserve great credit for their fine performance.

Meanwhile our Men’s senior B team with road relay Donore debutants all, Kevin Nolan, Michael Rickard, Paul Cummins and Tristan Druet (our new joint senior men’s coach) had a fine run finishing strongly and with good individual times. They are all aiming for 1500 or lower on the track so their runs will stand to them as the season goes on.

It was noticeable that nearly everyone’s individual performance was up on last year across all the teams and given we had 7 teams and consistently featured with our A teams in all events Donore had one of the strongest representations of any club. We certainly had a huge number of supporters and their encouragement really spurred the teams on. It is a great tribute to great work from Willie Smith as Ladies coach filling the shoes of Jim McNamara this year and the hard work of all the ladies that we fielded I think our best Ladies teams in years. There was great team spirit from our men who targeted this championship and with Ciaran O’Flaherty and Tristan Druet now setting the coaching plan for the men we hope to see even more of a great squad we have down at training partaking in all the club championship events.

A fine day for Donore indeed.

Round-Up: National Masters & Leinster Indoors, IUAA XC & Road Results

Track report
There was good news from the National Masters Indoors Championships in Athlone on Sunday. There was a double success for Donal Iremonger in the M45 class. He won silver in the 800m in an excellent time of 2.09.34 and he won the 400m in 55.18.

Anne Gormley won gold in the W50 3000M walk in a time of 19.53 which is a season’s best.

Last week there were multiple medals in the Leinster track and field indoors (results took a while to go up so here they are in full). Notable here was the silver for John Travers in the senior men’s 800m in 1.55.33 – a last sharpener before he went to Belgrade for the European Indoors. Ray Hynes got silver in the 3000m in 8.35.55 – great to see him back in the frame. In masters competition, there was gold M45 for Donal Iremonger in the 400m in 55.94. In the men’s 4×200 relay there was team silver – congratulations David Campbell, Adam Halpin, Conor Fox and Jack Rudden Kelly
David Campbell 400m 52.84 7th
Adam Halpin 400m 53.43 10th
Kevin Nolan 4.22.52 1500m 7th
Rory Owens 9.27.83 3000m 6th

Road and cross country roundup

The big result of the weekend was Daragh Fitzgibbon’s bronze medal in the IUAA cross country championships in a soggy Abbotstown – terrific run for Darragh who is going from strength to strength and he also helped his UCD Bears team to the silver team medal. Having a fine run in the women’s race was Jona Kalemi running for DCU in 38th place.

On the road there was a good run from Rossa Hurley in the Longford 10k who came 2nd in 33.35 coming back well from his injury. Belated well done to last week’s winners – Sorcha Nic Dhomhnaill was the ladies winner in the Adare 10k back in her native Limerick – this race attracted over 500 runners and she had a very tight finish to win by 3 seconds (38.30) on a tough, hilly course. Brother Aogan came 5th overall in 34.25. Seán Fox finished 3rd overall – and 1st M40 – in the very hilly Windmill 10k in Garristown on Sunday.

Ken McKeown was first home for Donore in 15th in the Kinvara 10k. Also representing the club in Kinvara was a crew of 15 Fit4Lifers from Donore, including coach Barry Potts, 13 of whom tackled the half with another 2 Fit4Lifers racing the 10k. Niamh O’Reilly did 1.48.08 and Neil Maddox did 1.45.19 in the half-marathon (both PBs).

Over in her native county Clare, Barbara Cleary was 1st woman and 3rd overall in the Michael Egan 5 mile in Quilty on another hilly lap – she won in 29.29

Q & A with John Travers

Donore Harriers own John Travers will be representing Ireland in the 1500m at the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade later today (3rd March 2017). The heats start at 6:15 p.m. and John will be in the 2nd heat at 6:24 p.m, which will be broadcast on RTE2, who have coverage starting from 6:00 p.m..

Before he set off for Belgrade, he took some time to answer a few quick questions…

1. If you could race over any distance, what would be the perfect race length for you?

Right now, I would probably say my perfect distance would be 3000m. Haven’t quite got it right over 5000 just yet!

2. Your coach often suggests athletes should “move up” – whats the longest distance you see yourself racing in your career?

I know for a fact I will eventually do marathons, not for a good few years yet. I ran a half a few years ago off just miles and ran quite well, so I have no doubts I will do a decent marathon.

3. Are you a home bird, do you prefer to live in Ireland?

No. I could literally live anywhere. It wouldn’t bother me at all.

4. Where is your favourite training venue abroad?

I would have to say Font Romeu which is at altitude in the south of France, it’s tough running but such a scenic place. I would love to live up there.

5. Did you consider taking up an athletic scholarship in the USA?

I did indeed, I had a few offers but decided it wasn’t worth the risk because at the time I was doing very little mileage and would have probably broke down. I was only 2 years into running as I was late enough taking up the sport.

6. What is your least favourite training session?

I wouldn’t say I have a least favourite as I love doing sessions. Probably not as keen on the easy runs as they can be quite monotonous.

7. And most favourite?

My favourite is probably a long hard tempo.

8. What win/ race has given you the most satisfaction in your athletics career?

I’d have to say the heats of the European Indoors in 2015 as I made my first ever Championship final.

9. Any advice for young aspiring athletes?

My advice is simple: if you are taking part in a few sports, enjoy it. Do not be rushed to quit one sport for another unless you’re sure it is the one you want to do. Never rush things as this will only work short term, long term is the much bigger picture. You want to run well in your late 20s not just compete well as a juvenile/junior.

10. What sport will you be participating in when you are 60 years old?

Providing I’m still mobile enough I will probably be playing golf. Wish I could play more now but running comes first.

11. Who is your favourite competitor in any sport, outside athletics?

I honestly don’t know – I don’t watch as much sport as I used to!

12. Your late Dad Stephen was a brilliant musician. Have you inherited any of his musical talent?

No – absolutely zero! And I don’t know where I got the sportiness from as he had no interest!

13. What is your favourite food?

Probably spaghetti with a lot of veg in it.

14. What is your all- time favourite film?

Happy Gilmore.

15. In a sentence , what would you say to Donald Trump?

Just get rid of the hair and be bald already, you look ridiculous!

John Travers Gets The Gold & A Super Silver for Lynda Ngankam: National Senior Indoors Report

There were two medals for Donore in this year’s National Senior Indoor Championships – the first to be held in the new facility in Abbotstown.

The most exciting finish of the championship involved our own John Travers in a thrilling showdown with St Coca’s Paul Robinson in the 1500m final. Both easily got through their heats the day before and in the final lap, Robinson had edged ahead but was chased down relentlessly by John and it was down to the wire with John getting the win on the line in 3.50.44 from Robinson’s 3.50.55. So congrats John Travers on a new national title! Next up for John is the 1500m at the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade.

In the triple jump there was a super silver medal for Lynda Ngankam who jumped a best of 11.27 in her first jump to clinch the second place. This is a great result for Lynda who was been steadily making waves in this event over the last couple of years, finishing fifth in last year’s senior outdoors, and a senior national medal is a great breakthrough for her – congrats to her and coach Gerry Ronan.

In the 3000m, we had Ray Hynes and Eric Keogh in action but unfortunately Eric had to retire with 800m to go. Ray finished in 10th place in 8.38.55 – good to see him back after a series of injuries.

On day 1 we had competitors in the High Jump, 400m and 800m heats. Lara O’Byrne was one of the youngest competitors and this was good experience for her in senior competition – she cleared 1,45m in a competition won by Sommer Lecky. Adam Halpin and David Campbell were in separate heats in the 400m where only the winner of each heat was guaranteed to make the final – Adam ran 56.07 and has ran faster this year but will be back in action again, David came third in his heat in 52.51. Sinead Lambe was in contention in the 800m heats – it was quite a messy race with 9 runners so the pace moved up and down considerably – she finished in 2.24.24 outside her best but in a very tactical race!

Well done all and thanks to those who came to support both days.

Raheny 5 Report & January Cross-Country Round-up

Raheny 5 Report

The biggest ever Raheny 5 mile race took place today (over 3,500 in the main race) and it turned into an historic day for the club with the first ever time a Donore lady – Barbara Cleary – finished first woman in one of Ireland’s most prestigious road races. There was some rainfall but not enough to play havoc with the race and there was no wind – so we saw a rake of great times and PBs on the day

Before the main event we had great runs today by the Donore young juveniles. Sean Kinsella was 2nd in the 8-12 group 800m. With excellent runs from Oliver Hopkins (4th), Michael Barry (12th) followed by Joe Kinsella. Our only girl today and on her debut run was Jenny Walsh, great running and as always smiling.

In the main race, we had 23 runners out and it was a great mix of some newly-minted members and club stalwarts like Tommy Halton who has done 30 Raheny’s in a row we think???

Star of the day was Barbara Cleary whose ladies victory was never in doubt from the start. Her time was a scintillating 27.34 which is a new PB – beating by a big margin Olympian Catherina McKiernan and Sarah Mulligan who has also represented Ireland. It’s the first time a Donore woman has claimed this victory, but no surprise to many – Barbara is on a winning streak and hasn’t put a foot wrong in recent races – her 3rd win in January alone. Sorcha Nic Dhomhnaill came 5th woman in a super 29.16 – another PB. Barbara also led the Donore ladies team (Barbara, Sorcha, Grace Kennedy, Bronagh Elliott to first place – beating Crusaders by 2 points. It’s been a good few years since the Donore girls won this so absolutely brilliant.

First in for the club overall was Eoin Durkan in 26.27 – super running and Kevin Nolan and Eoin Hannon were in next in the low 27s – then Chris Muldoon not far off. It was encouraging to see many runners who have joined Donore in the past year including some of the above and Ciaran, John, Fiona, Audrey, Ken – some wearing the black and white for the very first time. Thanks to the supporters too out there – always an exciting race to watch and one with some great Donore memories over the years

Cross country report – Schools, BHAA and Meet & Train

It’s been an exciting week for the club on the indoor track and road but the cross country season is still very busy. During the week many of our teenage endurance runners were in action competing for their schools in the West and East Leinster cross country championships. Phoenix Park was the west Leinster venue and it was a bitterly cold day at the Pope’s Cross area, Avondale House Rathdrum was the East venue and that features a fearsome hill for some of the races. Jumbo Senior Results Round-Up: from National Novice XC to a World Record Attempt via Waterford & the Captain’s Race…

National Novice XC Dundalk Report

It was another incredibly competitive day at this year’s National Novice championships in Dundalk IT – this race attracts one of the biggest fields in the cross country calendar and has grown over the years.

The women’s race consisted of 2 x 2k laps and had 136 finishers- a fair course with some steep hills nonetheless and underfoot conditions were quite good. Alma Hanevy made her customary steady start working her way up through the field to finish in 39th which was an excellent placing in a field of 136 – she finished around runners who were top 10 in last year’s national masters giving an idea of the standard here. Barbara Murray was next in 67th though only 38 seconds separated her and Alma such was the volume of runners coming over the line. Bronagh Elliott was next 8 seconds later in 70th, Amy Dodd is growing in stature with every race and finished in 84th position. Julia Hackett is delighted to be running championship cross country again and finished in 107th and Medbh Peavoy also made a comeback in 120th. The team finished 10th out of 18th and will build on this for the races coming up in 2017.

The men’s teams were missing a few key people on the day unfortunately but we still had 10 runners out. Niall Lynch was delighted with his 31st placing in a 176 strong field in the 6k race – and he had been on site from early on supporting at the juvenile races. Rossa Hurley 2nd in the Dublin Intermediate last week was feeling the effects of a cold so took a while to find his feet but he still battled well and had a very fast finish in 33rd, in next were Eoin Hannon 75th and Des Tremble 87th (Fergal Swaine was forced to retire). The Donore A team finished 9th out of 19 teams. Donore B team featured a mix of experience and some new runners in their first cross country season for Donore: Andrew Wilson 116th, Alan Farrell 121st, Fergal Roche 132nd, Rob Clougher 169th and Des Gill 176th were 17th. The full complement of the team will be back for the Masters and Intermediate races in January and February.

Thanks to the supporters who travelled down (and tent builders who now have it down to a fine art!)

Road Round-Up

It’s not just all cross country racing at this time of the year…Donore runners have recorded some fine runs on the road in the past few weeks.

At the Waterford Half marathon, Eric Keogh followed up his impressive showing at the National Senior cross country by breaking the 70 minute barrier at this sold-out fixture in Waterford town. He finished in 5th place in a time of 69.30. Four other Donore runners were there – suffering the effects of a cold Breda Mahony still finished in 98.40, Nicola Dowdall ran 1.40.25, not far off her lifetime best, Marianne Dunlevy had to stop mid-race but finished in 1.41.57 and Elaine Verdon was delighted with a PB of 1.42.30 – reaping the benefits of her Dublin marathon at the end of October. Later that day the ladies even got to meet Waterford’s own athletic legend Thomas Barr so a great finish to the weekend.
Rhona McHugh is coming back into good form with two 10 mile races lately – she finished in 73.04 at the Stook 10 mile in Kilkenny a testing race with a notorious hill in the middle. She followed this up with a PB in the Ballyroan Abbeyleix 10 mile in 69.30.
Meanwhile back in Dublin, Shane McAuley recorded an impressive 36.38 at the Aware 10k and Peter Nugent 39.56 in the same race.

Captain’s Race

This “cake race” club tradition usually happens on the last Saturday before Christmas after all the championship fixtures have finished for the year. A chance for various endurance groups to come together and race including the youngest runner 16year old Zak Ahmed – it is held over a three lap course which starts close to the army training grounds, up the horse gallop and back down at the stone bridge, 5k in all (and slightly more) Willie Smith marked the course, President Iain Morrison started the runners and captains Florence Curley and Rossa Hurley were there – injury prevented Rossa from running. First home was Eoin Hannon and first lady home was Barbara Cleary – Zak our youngest runner was 2nd overall. Afterwards, the runners gathered for mince pies and tea/coffee back at the clubhouse. Each runner brings a prize so everyone got to take home a festive gift. Results as follows:

1 Eoin Hannon 18.42
2 Zakariya Ahmed 19.08
3 Barbara Cleary 19.35
4 Neil McGettigan 19.41

4 x 1 Mile World Record Attempt

Congratulations to our own John Travers who was part of the 4 x 1 mile relay indoor world record attempt at the Believe & Achieve meet in the Athlone Indoor arena – the culminating event of a development meet organised by Dermott McDermott of Corran AC and the Believe and Achieve team. The record has stood for 23 years 1993 at 16.16. John along with Kieran Kelly, Eoin Everard and Joe Warne (a late replacement for Paul Robinson) all made a great crack at it and John had the fastest split of the four at 4.04. Unfortunately, the team didn’t break the mark on this occasion, just missing it by 6 seconds but by all accounts it was a super event and thanks to the Donore supporters who also travelled down for an exciting evening of athletics. Earlier in the day at the same event, Sam Allen finished 5th in 9:06.9 in a high-class 3000m won by Alberto Sanchez in a 8:00.72 – well within the 8:05 qualifying standard for the 2017 European Indoor Championships in Belgrade.

Meet & Train Cross Country Report

The first two rounds of the long running Meet and Train Women’s Cross Country league took place on November 27th in Dunboyne and on 18th December in Tymon Park.

Always run in a competitive but friendly atmosphere, Donore Harriers own Sue Lynch has long been the mainstay of the league. It has always been a springboard for those new to cross country running and a great team event. Each race is 2 miles in length over various cross country courses around Dublin/Meath

Round 1 in Cowpark Dunboyne – a tough enough course on bumpy terrain had 11 Donore runners competing in a field of 112 runners

20th Audrey Gahan 14.31

Weekend report: Schools Combined Indoors, Masters International, Leinster Senior & Remembrance Run

National Schools Combined Indoors

Well done to Lara O’Byrne and Roisin Rynn Cahill who competed in Athlone arena at the weekend for their school St Joseph’s in Lucan. Roisin finished in 4th place in the senior girls, just off the medals. Lara finished in 5th place in a very competitive inter competition just 14 points off 4th which would have seen her compete on the Irish team. She also got 3 personal bests today in long jump shot put and 800m . Both girls still have the national combined events to look forward to in the New Year.

British and Irish Masters Cross Country
The British and Irish Masters cross country was held in Tollcross Park Glasgow this year. Donore Harriers had just two competitors. Terry Mee, who competed on the Irish M70 team – a 5k race which is always ran with the masters women and was the 2nd home on the team but sadly Ireland were outside the medals coming 4th. 78 year old Ann Woodlock has competed in this race many times and she was on the W70 team finishing 4th on her team and they won a bronze medal.

Leinster Senior XC

Following her bronze medal at the Dublin Senior last week, Barbara Cleary continued her impressive form ahead of the National Senior inter-clubs in 2 weeks time, winning the Leinster Senior women’s cross country championship on Sunday in Tyrrellspass, on what was a pretty tough course. Lying 9th in the early stages, Barbara gradually worked her way up into the top 3. And despite a fall on a sharp bend, Barbara retained her lead and finished 10 seconds clear of Wexford runner and former 800m National champion Fiona Kehoe, and MSB’s Caitriona Mullen. A great run for Barbara and thanks to coach Willie smith who was there to see her victory and was able to give us a race report straight after the finish!

Remembrance Run Phoenix Park

Many Donore runners ran in remembrance of the late Jim McNamara and others who have passed. Race organiser Frank Greally was on hand after the run to present a special candle to Jim’s brother Mick and to Tommy Hayward’s son Eric. A very emotional day for “Jim’s girls” who all jogged around The Remembrance Run 5k on Sunday. The race honoured a number of great names of the Irish athletics scene who passed away this year and two of them were Jim McNamara and Tommy Hayward. Great to see all the Donore Harriers gang there: Sian O’ Connor, Rhona McHugh, Jennifer O’Keeffe, Catherine McKeon, Mary McDermott, Eilish Funston, Liagh Miller, Angela Eustace, Karen Behan, Niamh Murphy, Audrey Gahan, Pauline Dennigan and Charlie O Neill. Audrey Gahan joined us soon after Jim’s passing but she’s so one of the gang now that we forget she never had the pleasure of knowing Jim and that he never had the pleasure of knowing her! It was so good to see Pauline Dennigan who travelled up from Kerry to be with us here today, she was one of the old gang who raced many a championship race with us as we travelled the length and breadth of the country in the cross country season. Good to see Joan McTernan and Dave Hudson there too. Jim’s nephew and Ian Redican also ran today and he, Jim’s brother Mick and Tommy Hayward’s son Eric were all invited back to the VIP tent after to get a special memorial candle to both Jim and Tommy. Frank Greally who organises the race every year with AAI presented them with the candles. Mick will give this special candle to Jim’s daughter Andrea Draper. Well done to all Donore Harriers athletes that turned out today sorry if we missed you at the finish line…..

Donore Seniors & Juveniles Impress at Dublin XC Championships

It was a memorable and poignant day in Santry Demesne last Sunday at the Dublin XC championships, which started with success in the juvenile and junior races, including team medals in the U17 girls and U17 boys (both bronze). Individual juvneile highlights included another title for Louis O’Loughlin (stepping up an age group in u17), once again demonstrating his class on the country, as well as excellent 4th places for Fathi Aden (also stepping up in u17) and Barney Kelly in the u15 boys and a top 10 for Eliza Ni Thighearnaigh, who finished 8th in the u19 girls. Both medal-winning teams had several members stepping up an age group, which makes the achievement even more impressive. Full results below…

The successes continued at senior level; an individual bronze by Barbara Cleary was backed up by team medals in both men’s (silver) and women’s (bronze) races to make it a great day for the club.

This was a wonderful result for Donore Harriers’ women on a very emotional day in the first Dublin Seniors championships without Jim McNamara. But his girls are keeping his legacy going: a great third place for Barbara Cleary who is back on the scene with a bang, followed by super runs by Sorcha Nic Dhomhnaill, Karla Doran, Sinéad Lambe, Aislinn Nic Dhomhnaill, Aisling Swaine and Florence Curley secured team bronze and, in the final results, the women were just 7 points off silver.

The winning DSD team were presented with the Jim McNamara Perpetual cup and Pat Hooper of Raheny Shamrocks, club president Iain Morrison and Jim’s brother Mick McNamara gave a great tribute speech at the presentation in the Clonliffe Bar afterwards, where Jim’s daughter Andrea Draper presented our women with their bronze medals, his son Shane presented the Crusaders girls with silver and his son James presented the gold medals to the winning DSD girls.

While it would have been great for the women to have won this Cup, it was always going to be tough in one of the most competitive races of the cross country season. Barbara’s individual bronze was an additional sweetener to the day and it is great to see her back where she belongs after a long battle with injury. It’s 2009 since the women won a silver in the Nationals and this new look squad is the best senior team in years, with great medal potential in the future, with younger and faster women coming through.

Jim would have been very very pleased with his team: Sorcha, Karla, and Sinéad packed well and are running at a new level. Sinéad hasn’t competed in this race in 3 years and it’s great to see her running so well on the cross country after a bad injury stricken few years. And a super run from Aislinn NicDhomhnaill with her first race back after having her second baby in March days after Jim’s passing. Here’s wishing Íde Nic Dhomhnaill and Maura Kearns a speedy recovery from injury. and team captain Florence Curley did great to tough it out as she’s on the comeback trail after missing months of training with injury too.

The men’s squad was missing a few key runners through injury but, despite this, put in a brilliant performance to get a well deserved team silver medal behind Raheny Shamrock who were awarded the Padraig Keane memorial cup. First home for Donore was Eric Keogh in a fantastic 4th place, followed by John Travers in 5th, Mael Lambert (8th), Rossa Hurley (23rd), Niall Lynch (34th), Ken Nugent (36th).

All attention now turns to the National Inter Clubs Championships in Abbotstown on the 27th of this month where both senior men and women will be in the hunt for medals.

Autumn Open XC report & IMAA commemorates Jim McNamara with perpetual trophies.

The unveiling of the new cross country course at the National Sports Campus in Abbotstown was eagerly waited today at Athletics Ireland’s Autumn open cross country race festival. The masters races also doubled as the trial for the British and Irish Masters cross country race.

First off for were the senior and masters women & M65+ men over 3 laps of 2k. 65+ women completed 2x2k laps. An undulating course which had churned up somewhat with a few days heavy rain faced the runners. First two home for the ladies were Karla Doran and Sinead Lambe. Karla and Sinead were close for a good deal of the race. In the end, just 9 seconds separated them with Karla in 37th (24.07) and 7th in the W35 category. Sinead was 39th in 24.16 and this is a great cross country comeback for her after missing a number of seasons due to injury. Karen Behan had a very impressive run in 66th (26.10). Barry Potts looks to have made the M65 team for Glasgow finishing 4th in this age-group and Terry Mee topped the M70 class booking his berth to Glasgow, as did Ann Woodlock in the W70 category.

In the men’s 8k race, first home for Donore was Eric Keogh in 20th (Lee Van Haeften unfortunately retired from the race). 7 of Donore’s master runners contested the race with M40 Niall Lynch in 75th (29.03), Philip Hennessey 91st, Ken Norgrove 93rd, masters captain Des Tremble 99th, Shane McAuley 121st in his first cross country outing and Ian O’Leary making a return after injury in 129th. Unfortunately on this occasion none of our runners in the 8k men’s race made the Irish B&I team qualification in what was a particularly competitive masters race.

At the award presentation there was a moving tribute to the late Jim McNamara. He competed in this race many times including in 2015 for the last time and he was arguably Ireland’s greatest ever masters athlete. The Irish Masters Athletics Association (IMAA) commissioned two trophies for the first master man and woman in today’s race. With the cooperation of Jim’s family, a pair of his spikes was crafted into two beautiful perpetual trophies. These were presented to Letterkenny AC’s AnneMarie McGlynn and to Slieve Gullion’s Paddy Hamilton by the IMAA and Jim’s younger brother Mick McNamara – Jim’s son James, daughter Andrea and some extended family were also present. Donore Harriers thanks the association especially Mick Fennell, Anne Gormley and Fionnuala Moore for bringing to fruition this wonderful tribute
