Donore Harriers Athletics Report – w/e 3rd November 2019

HIGHLIGHTS: Women’s team bag bronze in the Dublin Senior cross-country championships. Barbara Cleary 4th individual. Men’s team 5th. Under 13 girls win team gold in the Dublin Juvenile Uneven Ages championships. Team bronze for Under 11 and Under 19 Boys’ teams. Individual gold for Matei Ursachi (U13 Boys) and Annabella Omozee (U9 Girls), with silver to Abdel Laadjel (U17 Boys), Emily Bolton (U13 Girls) and Olyver Whelan (U9 Boys) and bronze to Thomas Bolton (U15 Boys) and Eva Crowe (U13 Girls).

REPORT: 46 years-old Barbara Cleary put in another teak-tough performance to finish a fine 4th in the DUBLIN SENIOR CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS on Sunday (03.11.2019) – and in the process she spearheaded the Donore Harriers women’s team to take the bronze medal position. The undulating Santry Demesne course and heavy rainfall on the previous day ensured that the races were a proper cross-country test. Cleary (23.47) settled quickly into 4th position but she became isolated and was unable to bridge the gap to the top three. The race held over 4 by 1.5km laps, was son by Catherina Mullen of Metro St. Bridget AC in 23.01. Middle-distance specialist Maura Kearns (24.42) was next team member home in 11th spot. The team was completed by Grace Kennedy-Clarke (26.47) and Niamh O’Neill (26.52) who placed 25th and 27th respectively. This was a particularly fine effort from Kennedy-Clarke, coming just one-week after completing the Dublin Marathon in a 3 hours and 5 minutes. Crusaders AC (41) won the team event, with Donore Harriers (67) in bronze position – 9 points clear of 4th placed Dublin City Harriers.

The Donore Harriers men’s team (122) finished well outside the medals in 5th. First team member home after 10 kilometres was Matthieu Proffitt (37.09) in 23rd position. Niall Lynch (37.40) rallied well in the latter half of the race and gained to 27th spot, with Luke Boland (37.40) just one place behind. The team was closed by Gavin Keogh (39.11) in 44th place. With 4 athletes in the top 6, including winner Efrem Gidey (32.28), Clonliffe Harriers convincingly won the team gold.

In the preceding DUBLIN JUVENILE UNEVEN AGES CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS, the Donore Harriers Under 13 Girls team easily won the team event after 2.5km. Indeed, it proved to be a ‘tour de force’ with the scoring 4 in the top 7. Emily Bolton, who won the Under 12 race two weeks previous, came 2nd behind Saoirse Fitzgerald of Lucan Harriers. A strong finish saw Eva Crowe gain to the bronze position. Less than 10 metres back was Julie Cleary in 5th place. This was Cleary’s debut race for the club and there can be little doubt about her future potential. The team gold was secured by Lorraine O’Connor, who overcame a stomach bug, to place 7th. The non-scoring team member was Eleanor Hopkins in 28th spot.

In the first race of the day Annabella Omozee won the Under 9 Girls race over 800 metres with a gutsy gun to tape run. In the same race Siun Costello placed 38th.

Olyver Whelan had to settle for silver as a number of athletes contested at the front of the Under 9 Boys 800m race. Mark Nunan came 39th.

The Under 11 Girls race over 1,500 metres had 5 Donore athletes competing. First home was Amber Lynch, who was edged out of two positions in a sprint finish and placed 6th. Ruby Blake came 48th, Emily Farrell (stepping-up) 56th, Melody Omozee 63rd and Petra Cunningham (stepping-up) 72nd.

Good team packing in the Under 11 Boys race (1,500m) saw the Donore Harriers team take the bronze team medals. Cillian McCooey (8th), Jamie Kavanagh (15th), Sebastian Ursachi (16th) and Danny Colgan (21st) were the scoring 4. Daniel Browne (41st) and Caolan Costello (66th) were the non-scoring team members. The team might well have got better coloured medals, had not talented athlete Luuk Jackson retired from the race due to illness.

Matei Ursachi proved strongest in a competitive Under 13 Boys race to secure individual gold after 2.5 kilometres. James Dunne and Mario Omozee (step-up) came 40th and 79th behind Ursachi.

Honor Lynch and Laura Nunan put in battling performances to finish 11th and 15th respectively in the Under 15 Girls race over 3.5km. In the Under 15 Boys race over the same distance Thomas Bolton (stepping up) and Oliver Hopkins were in a breakaway group of 5 athletes at the fore of the race. The big moves were made in the final kilometre with the Donore Harriers duo unable to stay with the lead pace. It still proved a very fine effort as Bolton finished in bronze medal position with Hopkins in 4th.

Abdel Laadjel took up the lead in the early stages of the Under 17 Boys 5km race but was eventually overtaken by Scott Fagan of Metro St. Bridget AC, and finished an isolated 2nd. Behind him James Bolton, also stepping up an age group, had an eventful race. Bolton gained to 9th place in mid-race but suffered from a stitch and fell back to 14th position. However, a late rally saw him gain to 12th by the finish line.

There were 4 Donore Harriers athletes in the combined Under 19 Boys and Junior category race held over 6 kilometres. The team was led home by Gavin Curtin (21.26) who placed 6th in a very competitive U19 contest and 8th in the Junior category. Fathi Aden (21.41), making a welcome return to competition, came 7th (U19) and 10th (Jnr). The team was completed by Aidan Kelly (25.09) in 19th/25th and Keenan McDonnell (26.25) in 21st/27th. In the Under 19 team championship the Donore Harriers quartet came 3rd, whilst in the Junior contest they placed 4th – just 3 points behind 3rd placed Raheny Shamrocks.

In the NEW YORK CITY MARATHON (03.11.2019) Ian Martin (2.51.31) placed 733rd of more than 50,000 starters. He passed the half-way mark in 1.23.36. M45 athlete Ian Redican completed the 26.2miles in 4.33.02.

The NATIONAL, DUBLIN and LEINSTER MARATHON CHAMPIONSHIPS results incorporated into last week’s DUBLIN MARATHON (27.10.2019) saw plenty of medals coming the way of Donore Harriers athletes. Barry Potts made it a clean sweep winning the National, Dublin and Leinster gold in the M70 age category. Aislinn Nic Dhomhnaill took national silver in the Women’s over 40 age-group and claimed gold and silver medals in the Dublin & Leinster senior women’s championships respectively. Nic Dhomhnaill, together with Grace Kennedy-Clarke and Anne Curley, led the women’s team to gold medals when winning both the county and provincial titles, but the team narrowly missed out in the national championship – placing 4th.

Ray Hynes, who came 5th in the national M35 category, led the Donore Harriers M35 team to team victory in the Dublin championships. The team, completed by Fergal Whitty and Peter Gaffney, also won silver medals in the Leinster competition. Whitty won the M40 individual gold in both Dublin and Leinster, whilst Gaffney claimed gold and silver in the county and provincial M50 class.

Individual medals were also won by Anne Curley, silver in the W45, and Ariana Ball, bronze in the W35, in the Dublin marathon championships.

PARKRUN SERIES (02.11.2019): In the Parkrun series (02.11.2019) juvenile athlete Katie Delaney (23.53) was first woman home at Waterstown.

Donore Harriers Athletics Report – w/e 27th October 2019

HIGHLIGHTS: Eric Keogh records a time of 2.18.24 on his marathon debut in Frankfurt. Sub 2.30 runs by Ray Hynes and Fergal Whitty in Dublin and Lee Van Haeften in Frankfurt. In the 40th Dublin marathon Aislinn Nic Dhomhnaill 2.48.31 claims 3rd spot in W40 category, with Barry Potts 3.46.18 securing M70 silver. Juvenile athletes Gavin Curtin, Honor Lynch, Katie Delaney and Matei Ursachi are all first home at various parkruns.

REPORT: After months of hard miles and tough sessions a total of 50 Donore Harriers athletes faced their marathon challenge on Sunday (27.10.2019) at home in Dublin and away in Frankfurt.

Eric Keogh (2.18.24) arrived on the top stage of Irish marathon running with his debut effort in the FRANKFURT MARATHON. Running even splits of 1.09.18 and 1.09.06 Keogh averaged 3.17 per kilometre to finish in 28th place – and was the 12th European in what is one of the most competitive big-city marathons.   Lee Van Haeften, also running his debut marathon, placed 81st of more than 8,000 male runners. Van Haeften was hoping to beat 2.25 and his half-way time of 1.12.47 had him ‘on target’. However, he struggled in the final kilometres and a second-half timing of 1.15.37 resulted in a time of 2.28.23 and 81st place. A truly very fine effort! Shane Ryan (2.55.01) finally broke the 3-hours mark and placed 618th overall.

A crisp, cold morning turned into warm sunshine as the 40th edition of the KBC DUBLIN MARATHON hit the streets. There was plenty of interest for the Chapelizod based club with 47 runners on the starting waves. First home was Ray Hynes (2.25.33) who placed 23rd overall and an excellent 5th in the M35 age category. Hynes recorded a personal best time, after holding good form in the latter stages having passed the hallway point in 1.12.20.

Next Donore man was Fergal Whitty (2.29.09), repeating his sub-2.30 run of last year, to finish 39th overall and 6th in the M40 class. The teak-tough Whitty passed the halfway mark in 1.14.35 and is a master of consistency. Peter Gaffney (2.45.01) came 164th overall and a brilliant 4th in the M50 age-group. He was followed home by Aislinn Nic Dhomhnaill (2.48.31) in 210th position. Nic Dhomhnaill, a mother of 3 young children and competing in her first marathon in 10 years, was the 7th Irish woman to finish and came an impressive 3rd in the W40 age category.

Regular Dublin marathon runner Andy Kinane recorded a time of 2.48.49 to place 217th and 57th in the M35 class. Popular club coach and endurance athlete Niall Lynch (2.48.59) was 222nd and 25th M45. Chris Muldoon (2.49.09) hit ‘the wall’ just before 20 miles but recovered to place 226th and 53rd M40.

UK based Ken Nugent (2.51.00) came 264th and 72nd M35. Sean Fox (2.51.44) 287th and 69th M40 and Alan Farrell (2.54.15) 347th were next, placing 69th M40 and 39th M45 respectively.

There were personal bests for Danny O’Sullivan (2.54.15) 370th and 104th M35 and Alan Keogh (2.55.04) 380th and 98th M40.

Tony Barry (2.55.49) came 419th and 118th M35. Behind him Eoghan Doolan was having a fine run, knocking 6 minutes of his PB to set a new time of 2.58.54 to place 649th and 143rd senior male.

Shane McAuley (3.04.16) came 827th and 114th M45, whilst Grace Kennedy-Clarke (3.05.00) running her 4th marathon of 2019 finished 858th overall and 28th senior woman. Craig Scott (3.08.33) placed 1,054th and 289th M40.

Anne Curley (3.09.20), who like the aforementioned Fox and McAuley had competed in the Berlin Marathon last month, put in a courageous run to place 1,113th and 11th woman in the over-45s category.

Stephen Dawson M35 ran 3.09.55 as Oliver O’Hara knocked 14 minutes of his previous best marathon time to get home in 3.14.24 for 1,428th place and 388th M40.

Ariana Ball (3.19.35) came 1,875th and 38th W35, ahead of Colm O’Connell (3.21.40) 2,017th and 433rd M35 and Guillaume Nolain (3.22.54) 2,127th and 342nd senior man.

Next for Donore Harriers were Brian Gaffney (3.26.00) in 2,396th and 619th M40, Breda Mahony 2,281st and 85th W40 and Patrick Farrell (3.29.02) 2,828th and 585th M35. Farrell knocked more than 20 minutes of his previous best marathon time.

The remainder of Donore Harriers’ finishers are listed in the results section below. Special mention to the remarkable Barry Potts (3.46.18), running in his first marathon in 16 years. Potts placed 4,872nd overall from 17,680 finishers and came 2nd in the M70 age group.

Not far behind the Donore Harriers veteran, Pamela White (3.50.18) showed true grit and determination in the final few kilometres to finish 5,578th and 182nd senior woman. White was struggling at the 20 miles point but put in a huge effort to get home in a respectable time.

Another returning the marathon after a break Charlie O’Neill. O’Neill, who is beginning his 2nd term as Club President, recorded a time of 4.28.37 to place 11,408th and 38th in the M65 category. It was O’Neill’s first marathon in 5 years.

Laura Rice (4.41.11) had to overcome stomach problems but reached the finish line in 4.41.11 to finish in 12,847th place. There was a super effort also from Helaine Kelly (4.38.31), a mother of 5 children who all represent the club’s juvenile teams.

PARKRUN SERIES (26.10.2019): In the Parkrun series (26.10.2019) juvenile athletes Gavin Curtin (18.31 at Corkagh), Matei Ursachi (19.07 at Father Collins), Honor Lynch (20.18 at St. Anne’s) and Katie Delaney (24.33 at Waterstown) were all first place finishers.

Donore Harriers Athletics Report – w/e 20th October 2019

HIGHLIGHTS: Rossa Hurley 3rd in M35 class in the Autumn Open Cross gaining automatic selection for the Ireland ‘B&I Masters’ championship team. Emily, Thomas and James Bolton and Abdel Laadjel win individual medals in the Dublin Juvenile Even Ages championships – as Donore Harriers teams win gold (U14 Girls), silver (U14 Boys) and bronze (U16 Boys). Amy Moriarty runs 3.24 in Amsterdam.

At the SPAR AUTUMN OPEN CROSS event at Abbotstown on Sunday (20.10.2019) Rossa Hurley withheld the late challenge of Thomas Lupton of Portlaoise AC to take the 3rd place step on the podium. In the process he also secured his selection to the Irish M35 team to compete in the British & Irish Cross-Country championships to be held at Aintree Racecourse on the 16th of November. The selection policy gives automatic selection to the first 4 finishers in the trial races, with the remaining 2 places at the discretion of the Irish Masters Athletics Association.

Both Hurley and Lupton had made conservative starts and gained places in the middle part of the race, with Hurley holding a 4-seconds advantage as they entered the last of five 1,500-metre laps. The Donore Harriers star dug deep to get M35 category bronze with a time of 24.49, with Lupton just one-second behind. The master’s race and M35 category was won by Colm Rooney (23.31) of Clonliffe Harriers, who was awarded the Jim McNamara golden shoe, in honour of the late and great Donore Harriers athlete and coach. In the same race Gavin Keogh (27.39) came 42nd and 15th in the M35 age category, with Des Tremble placing 50th and 14th in the M45 class.

In the Women’s master race over 6km, the Jim McNamara ‘golden shoe’ trophy was won by Teresa Doherty (21.48) of Finn Valley AC. The Golden Shoes were presented to the winners by Jim’s son Shane McNamara, who was accompanied by his 3 children (Jim’s grandchildren). This was the 4th year of the awards in memory of the former Olympic Games marathon runner. Donore’s Maura Kearns (23.53) came 15th overall and a fine 7th in the W35 age group – and Audrey Gahan (25.57) came 36th and 15th in the W40 age group. Sorcha Nic Dhomhnaill (22.08) came 11th in the senior women’s race, also over 6km.

In the SPAR cross-country xperience race over 4km Sarah Ni Ruairc (21.42) came 37th overall and was the 10th woman home.

Earlier in the day the Abbotstown venue hosted the DUBLIN JUVENILE EVEN AGES CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS. Top of the bill for the Donore Harriers team was Emily Bolton, who romped to victory in the Under 12 Girls race over 2km. In the same race Abigail Tolan came 25th, with Ava Hoare 58th, Tara Hoare 62nd and Melody Omozee, stepping-up an age-group, in 70th. The unfortunate Amber Lynch, who was also stepping-up, fell heavily on the 2nd lap and retired from the race.

16 years-old Abdel Laadjel, stepped-up to compete in the Under 18 Boys race over 6km. Laadjel contested for the lead in first of 4 laps over an undulating 1.5km route, before race-favourite John Fanning of Skerries AC made his big move on Lap 2. Despite a big effort on the last lap Laadjel was unable to rein in Eanna Moynihan-O’Braidaigh of Templeogue AC and had to settle for a highly creditable 3rd place. Not far behind Laadjel an ever-improving Gavin Curtin was putting in a gutsy performance to finish an impressive 6th.

James Bolton, wearing the black and white of Donore Harriers for the first time, finished an excellent 2nd place in the Under 16 Boys race over 4km. The talented Oliver Hopkins, stepping-up an age, came a fine 10th, with the team completed by Sean Kinsella in 34th and Alan Farrell in 45th place. The team came 3rd on 91 points, just 5 ahead of Cabinteely AC (96). DSD AC came 1st on 37 with Clonliffe Harriers 2nd on 59.

James’s younger brother Thomas (Bolton) also won individual silver in the 3 kilometres Under 14 Boys race. Thomas was one of 5 athletes who ran in close order in the first half of the race, before eventually settling for the runner-up spot as the race became stretched. Matei Ursachi, another athlete running in an older category, gave chase to the leading five and his gutsy performance saw him secure 6th place. Newcomer Dylan McKenna, showing good potential, came 17th. The team was closed out by James Dunne and Joe Kinsella, who placed 33rd and 36th respectively. The Donore Harriers team scored 58 points to place 2nd behind winners Clonliffe Harriers (33) and well ahead of bronze team Crusaders AC (80).

The best team performance came in the Under 14 Girls race (3km). Two step-up athletes made it to the top 10 as Lorraine O’Connor gained to 5th and Eva Crowe was in a close-range 8th. A determined Laura Nunan, overcoming a recent back injury, made up several places in the final kilometre to finish 16th. Honor Lynch closed the scoring 4 in 21st spot. Katie Delaney came 48th and Sarah Tolan 51st. In the team competition Donore Harriers came first on 50 points, 10 points clear of Lucan Harriers (60) with Rathfarnham AC (63) in 3rd.

Annabella Omozee fell back several places in the closing stages of the Under 10 Girls 1km race crossing the line in 16th place. Emily Farrell came 20th, with Ruby Blair 25th and Beth O’Connor in 27th.

In the Under 10 Boys race over 1km Sebastian Ursachi (22nd) was very disappointed after a fall put paid to his chances of a top 6 finish. Mark Nunan (step-up) came 37th and Phillipe Gaudin 59th.

Liam Blair (28th), Mario Omozee (57th) and newcomer Ross Cassidy (62nd) were the Donore Harriers trio in the Under 12 Boys 2km race.

Two Donore Harriers athletes were among more than 13,000 runners in the AMSTERDAM MARATHON on Sunday (20.10.2019). Amy Moriarty (3.24.07) ran a consistent race to finish 2,367th overall and 86th in the senior women’s category. Eddie Bolton (4.30.37) suffered from cramp in the final stages of the race but dug-deep to make it to the finish line.

PARKRUN SERIES (19.10.2019): In the Parkrun series (19.10.2019) Niall Lynch was first home at St. Anne’s Park in a brisk 16.47, whilst Sinead O’Reilly was the first woman home at Royal Canal Kilcock in 20.39. Nicola Dowdall (24.00) was the 2nd female finisher in Corkagh Park, with Mary McDermott (25.04) 3rd female at Naas. At Waterstown Park two juvenile athletes had fine runs. Dylan McKenna (21.46) came 4th overall with Katie Delaney (23.49) placing 14th and 3rd female finisher.

Donore Harriers Athletics Report – w/e 13th October 2019

HIGHLIGHTS: Josh O’Sullivan 3rd in the Armed Forces 10km, then made it 50 out of 50 in the Parkrun series. Oliver Hopkins won the junior category in the ‘Brothers’ schools XC event. Chris Muldoon 3rd in the Rosemount Half-Marathon. Des Gill runs 3.48 in the Melbourne Marathon.

The 40th version of the ARMED FORCES AN COSANTOIR 10km race at the Phoenix Park on Wednesday (09.10.2019) saw Josh O’Sullivan-Hourihan (31.47) finish in 3rd place behind winner Kenneth Rodgers (31.17).

On the same day at the BROTHERS BY YOUR SIDE SCHOOLS CROSS COUNTRY RACES at Santry Demesne Oliver Hopkins, representing St. Declan’s School, convincingly won the Junior Boys category. Honor Lynch and Eleanor Hopkins came 8th and 19th respectively in the Minor Girls race.

Chris Muldoon continued his busy racing schedule with 3rd place in the 2nd annual ROSEMOUNT HALF-MARATHON in Co. Meath on Saturday (12.10.2019). Muldoon completed the picturesque rural course in 1.19.45. The race was won by Donal Mulligan (1.13.27) of Longford AC.

Des Gill competed in the MELBOURNE MARATHON on Sunday (13.10.2019). Here is his account of the race as posted on Facebook : What a fantastic experience. Perfect running conditions, 14-18 degrees and the odd gentle Zephyr to keep us cool. Starting a few rows from the front at 7:00am by the Rod Laver Arena. We ran at an easy pace towards the skyscrapers. In perfect running conditions the Km’s peeled off and I found myself comfortably running with the 3:20 pacer though the city suburbs for the first 12 k to the coast road at St Kilda. What a long road! Passed through the half marathon marker at 1:39 and all was good. Loving my first Marathon . At 28k still on the St Kilda coast road it was like someone flicked a switch and my legs suddenly ceased to function. It was kinda like seeing someone leaving a late-night bar back in the day after a few too many beers meandering from left to right with a pair of rubber legs. I decided the best thing to do was to walk for a while and true enough after a Km I managed to slowly pick up the pace. It was now a question of just getting to the finish line. And what a challenge the following 14 k were. Full on . Great lift when I saw my daughter Rebecca cheering me on at 35 and 40k. About 39 k a voice running beside me exclaimed “Come on Donore” he introduced himself as Nigel Travers a past member who used to throw discus for the club. Great boost. The finish into the stadium with a lap to the line is something I’ll never forget. I crossed it in 3:48.35. A first Marathon experience indelibly imprinted forever in my mind and whatever is left of my legs.  Loved every moment of it.

PARKRUN SERIES (12.10.2019): Josh O’Sullivan-Hourihan (16.35) chalked up his 50th parkrun with his 50th first place finish at Waterstown last Saturday. Donore LTAD Distance Squad Trip to Tibradden

On Sunday 22 September, a group of 19 young athletes from the Donore Harriers Juvenile Distance Running Squad braved the elements and ran up and over two of the highest peaks in the Dublin Mountains – Tibradden and Two Rock.  Despite dire weather warnings, the rain mostly held off as the group set off from Tibradden Wood to begin the climb.  An hour and a half later, they were back where they had started, lungs and legs burning, having spent a fantastic morning in the mists above Dublin while the city below was still waking up.  The morning finished up with a fantastic visit to Zip it where the more adventurous members of the group shimmied up trees and zip lined from great heights.  Thanks are due to the parents who accompanied us on this trip and in particular to our ever reliable sponsors 123.ie who’s ongoing support of the juvenile section of the club makes events such as this possible.

Donore Harriers Athletics Report – w/e 29th September 2019

Anne Curley described her excellent 3.09.40 run at the BERLIN MARATHON (29.09.2019) as a “sweet victory” after a recurring foot injury hampered her preparation. Curley afterwards paid tribute to her coach Willie Smith, whose training sessions allowed her to “get very fit in a short time”. The Donore athlete, who passed the halfway mark in 1 hour and 36 minutes, was the 271st woman athlete to compete the 26.2-mile course, placing 34th in the W45 age category. Sean Fox (2.44.44) was the 727th male finisher and placed 118th in the M40 grade and Shane McAuley (2.57.27) was 1839th and 252nd in the M45 category. There were over 40k finishers.

In the RATHFARNHAM 5km ROAD RACE on Sunday morning (29.09.2019) a contingent of 10 Donore Harriers athletes were led home by Luke Boland (16.19), who placed 39th of more than 800 athletes and was the 26th senior man. Next Donore athlete was Gavin Keogh (16.44) in 52nd and 34th senior. Donal Iremonger (17.38) came 97th position and 8th in the M45 age group, with Patrick Byrne (54th senior) was just 2 seconds and 2 places further back. Aoife Ni Thuathail (19.51), showed good form ahead of next weekend’s Dublin Novice cross-country championship, when placing 192nd overall and 23rd senior woman. The Donore athlete placed 16th overall out of 338 finishers. The inaugural race was held over a narrow course that included canal towpaths, country roads and cycle lanes in the Clondalkin and City West area. Elsewhere,

Barbara Murray (26.27) came 8th overall and 2nd woman at the BALBRIGGAN & DISTRICT AC 4 MILE ROAD RACE (29.09.2019).
